the Spirit of Mahatma Gandhi lives through every nonviolent action

From 21st to 23rd of June, I paid my 68th visit to Velsesia to visit one of my first friends in Italy. Riccardo Gramegna. It was in 1982 that I met for the first time in India when Riccardo and his wife Margarete were exploring the foot prints of Mahatma Gandhi and had stayed with my family as SERVAS members. They were totally new entry to the Gandhian movement from the West at that young age. I was till then have never been to any Western country. This young couple was very much active in regional politics in his province Valsesia. Riccardo at that time was a member of the regenal essambly in Piemounte. He had an urge to look for innovative politics based on the thinking of Gandhi. When they were staying with me I introduced the couple to some of the Gandhian institutions and my coworkers that I knew and I have been working with them for the last 12 years(1970--1982), including Brahm Vidya Mandir, Pawnar, near Wardha, where Acharya Vinoba Bhave had been staying in his last days. They were lucky to have met Vinobaji as he had died soon after. The message that Vinobaji gave them were his most presiesed, Satya, Prem Karuna, Baba's Jai Jagat.

Since the time they met Vinobaji, for Riccardo and his wife Margeret,it became a Mantra in action and they are still trying to live this goal in their daily life according to Western way of life. So much so that though they belonged to a very rich family, but trying to live a life of voluntry poverty in a small rented house in a small village, Grinasco, near Novara. For me it was a home-coming. We discussed at length the proposed program of Silver Jubeele of Peoples March for a Nonviolent Society, which many of you know, was first organised in 1986, during the International Year of Peace declared by UNO. Riccardo and his devoted colleauges had played a key role. This time the March will be done in the socially disturbed areas of rural India. I hope you all will recieve detailed information about this historic March very soon. I request and pray for your active co-operation as you have been helping Gandhi-in-Action, since its inception from 1984, when the small seed has been planted.

My own finding is that first and foremost action in nonviolence (Ahimsa) is the personal aspect of turning to become a vegetarian. It is kind-of easy if not other-intentional to be non violent with…Continue
